Who We Are
Our story began in the stunning foothills and vast grasslands of southern Alberta, at the iconic OH Ranch, a ranch that was in the family for three generations. The OH had established a legacy of award-winning purebred Hereford cattle for decades, including at The Royal Agricultural Winter Show in Toronto. With the guidance of seasoned cattlemen, our knowledge of animal husbandry was anchored at the OH Ranch. We got married there and then decided to create our own history.
So, we moved to Australia, bought a rundown sheep farm, and within five years, converted it into a successful cattle ranch. Over the next 30 years, we built homes and barns, re-fenced the entire 7600-acre ranch, raised our family and developed our own breeding program. The hard work paid off. Our small herd of cows were two-time winners of one of the toughest prime cattle competitions in Australia, with a focus on eating quality and tenderness.
Our kids were growing up, and it was time to move our family back home to Canada and extended family. We found a beautiful piece of pristine grassland in the Similkameen Valley, where we now produce naturally raised cattle and sheep. And, we decided to bring some of our Australian success with us, in the form of frozen embryos and semen so that we could continue to learn, adapt to local conditions and develop the same high quality we’ve produced in past.
With an amazing view of rolling hills and mountain peaks in the distance, we love the lifestyle we are creating with neighbours, friends and family. Working closely with our animals is a joy, and with our kids just a short distance away, we are truly home again.
We have a real mixed bag of sheep breeds. When we got back to Canada from Australia, we had to get back into sheep as we just missed our 3 or 4 weekly lamb dinners. We bought little flocks from all sorts of people who were so happy their ewes were going to a new home and not to market. We still have some of our original girls.
Contrary to what many people think, sheep actually are quite intelligent and have varied personalities. Most of our ewes love a chat with a tummy scratch. They all come home every night, brought in by their 4 livestock guardian dogs, just to be safe from predators. First thing each morning we open the gate and the dogs take them back out to graze.
The lamb we produce is as good as any we have ever eaten, our customers all agree. Raised on bio-diverse high-country grasslands the flavour is unmatched.
Our Lamb
Nestled in the Similkameen Valley, our cattle spend their lives in pastures where there is an abundance of fresh air, native grasses and fresh water from both springs and snow melt.
This sustainable and stress-free environment simply brings out the best in our animals and ensures a healthy and growing herd year after year.
Part of our philosophy is for nature's pure bounty to become a culinary delight. Jura meats is about a holistic approach to our animals and the nourishment they give us going hand in hand with our environmental stewardship. Free from hormones and antibiotics, our goal is simple yet profound, to provide beef and lamb that's as wholesome for our customers as it is for the piece of earth we care for.
